CHIEF YORK RESPONDS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT FIRE DISTRICT FUNDING CONCERNS

We appreciate the media interest in covering the growing concerns for public safety in El Paso County and across Colorado. Cimarron Hills Fire Protection District has worked diligently to make smart and sustainable financial choices, while still working to provide top-notch fire and emergency medical services to our community. The reality for our community is we have grown, we have increased our calls for service, and our response times to those calls is worsening. This is unacceptable and not what our community deserves. We need to address response times through additional firefighters on-duty. We need to address our aging fleet and facilities. We are working to find long-term solutions. Our Board of Directors have made the decision to pursue Sales Tax on the November ballot. This tax will shift the sole responsibility of funding our fire district from the property owners to a shared responsibility through all who do business within our boundaries. Due to long-term funding needs and concerns, our fire district is considering all options which could include a reduction in services to our community. This is a last resort option, but an option nonetheless.

We appreciate our community and we look forward to continued meaningful discussions on how to best provide fire and emergency services.
